Internal Family Systems Therapy in Guelph
A compassionate, transformative approach to help you understand yourself from the inside out.
Evera Psychotherapy offers Internal Family Systems therapy for adults and teens in Guelph & online across Ontario.
What if the parts of you that you've been fighting hardest to get rid of are actually trying to help?
There’s the part of you that shuts down when things get hard. The one that lashes out before anyone can hurt you first. The one that pushes relentlessly, convinced that if you just work hard enough, everything will be okay. The one that numbs out with food, or wine, or scrolling, or busyness — anything to not feel what’s underneath.
You’ve probably tried to manage these parts. Reason with them. Override them. Be more disciplined, more present, more in control.
And still, they show up. Because they were never the problem.
Internal Family Systems therapy is built on a radical and deeply compassionate idea: that every part of you — even the ones you’re most ashamed of, most exhausted by, most desperate to be rid of — developed for a reason. And that the path to real, lasting change isn’t fighting those parts. It’s understanding them.
At Evera Psychotherapy in Guelph, our IFS-informed therapists help you build a different relationship with yourself — one where all the parts of you finally feel safe enough to let go of what they’ve been carrying.
IFS is particularly powerful when you feel pulled in different directions, stuck in patterns you can’t seem to break, or disconnected from a stable sense of who you actually are. You might notice:
- A harsh inner critic that never seems to let up, no matter how much you accomplish
- Feeling flooded by emotions that seem to take over completely — anger, shame, anxiety, despair
- Swinging between extremes — motivated then collapsed, open then shut down, loving then resentful
- A sense of going through the motions without feeling like you're really there
- Repeating patterns in your relationships that you understand intellectually but can't seem to change
- Numbing, avoidance, or self-sabotage that shows up even when life is going well
- Deep shame about parts of yourself that you'd never want anyone to see
- A persistent sense of being burdened, heavy, or weighed down from the inside
If any of this resonates, IFS may be the approach that finally helps all of you make sense.

What Is Internal Family Systems Therapy?
Internal Family Systems — IFS — is a powerful, evidence-based therapeutic model developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s. At its core, IFS understands the human mind not as a single, unified self, but as a system of distinct parts — each with its own perspective, feelings, memories, and motivations.
This isn’t a metaphor. It’s a clinical framework that helps explain why we feel conflicted, why we behave in ways that seem to contradict our values, and why certain patterns persist even when we desperately want them to change.
IFS identifies three broad categories of parts:
Exiles — the younger, vulnerable parts of us that carry pain, shame, fear, or trauma from the past. These parts are often locked away because their feelings were too overwhelming to be held at the time.
Managers — the parts that work hard to keep us functional and protected. They show up as perfectionism, people-pleasing, hypervigilance, control, criticism — anything that keeps the exiles’ pain from surfacing and disrupting daily life.
Firefighters — the parts that rush in when exile pain breaks through anyway, doing whatever it takes to extinguish the feeling fast. These are the parts behind bingeing, numbing, dissociating, self-harm, rage, or compulsive behaviour.
Alongside all of these parts is something IFS calls the Self — a calm, clear, curious, compassionate core that exists in everyone, no matter how buried it feels. The goal of IFS isn’t to eliminate or overpower your parts. It’s to help the Self step into leadership, so that every part of you can finally be heard, understood, and freed from what it’s been carrying.
At Evera Psychotherapy, our IFS-informed therapists bring genuine warmth, clinical skill, and deep respect for the inner world you’ve built. We move at your pace, we never force access to painful material, and we work collaboratively with all the parts of you — including the ones that aren’t sure they trust us yet.

What IFS Can Help With
IFS is a flexible, deeply humane approach that works across a wide range of concerns. At Evera Psychotherapy, we use IFS-informed therapy to support clients with:
Trauma & PTSD
IFS is one of the most effective approaches for working with trauma because it never requires you to relive what happened. Instead, it works with the parts of you that are still living in the past — helping them finally feel safe enough to release what they’ve been holding.
Childhood & Developmental Trauma
The experiences of early life — neglect, criticism, emotional unavailability, abuse, or chronic unpredictability — leave parts of us frozen in those moments. IFS gently accesses those younger parts and offers them something they never got: understanding, compassion, and genuine safety.
Anxiety & Chronic Worry
Anxiety is rarely a problem in itself — it’s a part doing a job. IFS helps you understand what that part is protecting, what it’s afraid will happen if it lets up, and how to build the kind of inner trust that makes the constant vigilance feel less necessary.
Depression & Emotional Numbness
The heaviness of depression often involves parts in deep conflict — managers trying to keep things together, exiles carrying unbearable weight, firefighters pushing everything down. IFS untangles that system with care, creating space for something lighter to emerge.
Inner Critic & Shame
The harshest voice inside you isn’t your enemy. It’s usually a part that learned a long time ago that being hard on you was safer than letting you get hurt by someone else. IFS helps you understand that part’s origins — and gradually, shift its role.
Relationship Patterns & Attachment
When certain parts get triggered in close relationships — the abandonment-sensitive part, the shut-down part, the part that pushes people away — IFS helps you understand what’s driving those reactions and build more conscious, connected responses.
Complex Identity & Self-Worth
For anyone who has struggled to feel at home in themselves — because of cultural pressure, family dynamics, trauma, or simply a long history of being told their inner experience was wrong — IFS offers a way back to the self that was always there.
Whatever you’re carrying, every part of you is welcome here.

Common Questions About IFS Therapy
Is IFS evidence-based?
Yes. IFS is listed as an evidence-based practice by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and has a growing body of clinical research supporting its effectiveness for trauma, depression, anxiety, and a range of other concerns. It is also widely used in combination with other approaches like EMDR to address trauma at multiple levels simultaneously.
Do I have to believe in the parts model for IFS to work?
Not at all. Many clients come in skeptical about the idea of parts, and IFS works just as well as a framework or a metaphor. What matters isn’t belief — it’s curiosity. If you’re willing to notice what’s happening inside you with a little openness, the model tends to make itself felt relatively quickly.
What if I can't identify any parts?
That’s completely okay, and more common than you might think. Some parts don’t want to be seen right away, and that reluctance is itself information. Your therapist will never push. The work unfolds at the pace that feels safe — for you and for your system.
Is IFS the same as having multiple personalities?
No. Having parts is a universal human experience — not a disorder. The parts model describes the natural multiplicity of the mind, not a clinical condition. IFS doesn’t pathologize the inner world; it works with it respectfully, as something that developed for good reasons and can be worked with rather than managed.
How is IFS different from other types of therapy?
Most therapies work at the level of thoughts, behaviours, or narrative. IFS works at the level of the inner system — the parts and their relationships to each other and to the Self. It’s less about understanding what happened and more about building a compassionate relationship with the parts of you that are still responding to what happened. For many clients, it reaches places that other approaches couldn’t.
How long does IFS therapy take?
It varies significantly depending on what you’re working on. Some clients notice meaningful shifts in the early sessions — a softening of the inner critic, a new understanding of a familiar pattern. Deeper work with exiles and unburdening typically unfolds over months of consistent sessions. Your therapist will be honest with you about what to expect once they understand your goals and your system.
Can IFS be combined with EMDR?
Yes — and this is actually a particularly powerful combination. IFS helps build the inner relationship and access the parts that carry trauma; EMDR then helps those parts process and release what they’ve been holding. At Evera, Priya is trained in both, and often integrates them when appropriate for a client’s specific needs and goals.
