Therapy For First-Generation Immigrants in Guelph
Support that understands where you came from, what you carried here, and who you're still becoming.
Evera Psychotherapy offers culturally sensitive therapy for immigrants and newcomers in Guelph & online across Ontario.
You built a life here. Nobody told you how much that would cost.
You made it. You left behind everything familiar, built something new in a country that didn’t always make it easy, and kept going even when you were exhausted and homesick and not sure you’d made the right choice.
From the outside, it looks like success. And in many ways, it is.
But there’s another part of the story. The grief you never had space to feel for what you left behind. The pressure of holding your family’s hopes alongside your own. The exhaustion of navigating two cultures — belonging fully to neither. The loneliness of being surrounded by people who don’t quite understand the world you came from.
And then the guilt for struggling at all, when you know how much you sacrificed to be here.
At Evera Psychotherapy in Guelph, our therapists understand that experience — not just intellectually, but personally. We offer a space where your whole story is welcome. Not just the resilient parts.
The weight that immigrants carry is real, and it rarely announces itself as a mental health concern. It often just feels like life. You might notice:
- A persistent sense of loneliness or not fully belonging, even after years of building a life here
- Anxiety about your future, your status, your family back home, or whether you've made the right choices
- Grief — for people, places, versions of yourself, and a home that no longer exists in the same way
- Pressure to succeed that feels tied not just to your own ambitions but to everything your family gave up
- Guilt for struggling when you know how much you have, and how much others sacrificed
- Conflict between your cultural values and the expectations of the world you're living in now
- Difficulty trusting people or asking for help, when self-reliance has always been the only option
- A growing sense of resentment, disconnection, or numbness that you can't quite explain
If any of this resonates, you're not weak and you're not broken. You're carrying something real. And you deserve real support.

We're Here For You
Therapy That Actually Gets It
There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that comes with being an immigrant, and it doesn’t fit neatly into the boxes that most therapy was designed for.
Standard approaches can miss the mark. They can feel too individualistic in a way that clashes with your values. Too focused on setting boundaries with family when your relationship with family is also your greatest source of love and meaning. Too quick to pathologize responses that made complete sense given what you survived and what you left behind.
At Evera Psychotherapy, we don’t do that. We understand that mental health doesn’t exist in a cultural vacuum. We know that the pressure you feel from your family isn’t simple. We know that grief for a homeland is real grief. We know that the identity questions you carry are some of the most profound a person can face.
Our therapists bring cultural humility, genuine curiosity, and deep respect to every session. We won’t ask you to choose between your culture and your wellbeing. We won’t flatten the complexity of your experience into a diagnosis. And we won’t pretend we understand everything but we’ll always work hard to.
Because the most important thing isn’t that we share your exact background. It’s that we’re genuinely committed to understanding yours.
Culturally Adapted CBT
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy helps you identify and shift the thought patterns driving anxiety, guilt, or low mood. We adapt it to your specific cultural context — not the generic version that assumes a Western individualist framework as the baseline.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy
Internal Family Systems helps you understand the different parts of yourself — the one who performs for the outside world, the one who protects the family, the one who carries the grief — and develop a more compassionate, integrated relationship with all of them.
Somatic Practices & Mindfulness
Stress lives in the body. Somatic and mindfulness approaches help you regulate your nervous system, reconnect with yourself, and build a sense of groundedness — even when external circumstances remain uncertain.
Trauma-Informed Care & EMDR
When stress, loss, or experiences of racism and discrimination have left a deeper mark, trauma-informed approaches — including EMDR — help process what’s been stored in the nervous system and build genuine safety in the present.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT helps you build a different relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings — including the ones rooted in cultural conflict, family pressure, or grief. It supports you in moving toward a life that feels meaningful, even while holding the complexity of your experience.

Common Questions About Immigrant Therapy
I didn't grow up in a culture where therapy was normal. Is that going to be an issue?
Not here. We understand that therapy is a foreign concept for many families and cultures — and that seeking support can feel like an admission of weakness, a betrayal of family privacy, or simply something people don’t do. We hold that with respect. You don’t need to have grown up with therapy to benefit from it, and you don’t need to leave your values at the door when you come in.
Will my therapist actually understand my cultural background?
We can’t promise that your therapist will share your exact background — but we can promise that cultural humility and genuine curiosity are at the core of how we work. Our team is diverse, and understanding your cultural context is something we take seriously. The free 15-minute consultation is a great opportunity to get a sense of whether the fit is right before you commit.
I feel guilty struggling when I know how much I have and how much my family sacrificed. Is that normal?
Incredibly common — and worth exploring in therapy rather than using as a reason to dismiss your experience. The sacrifices that brought you here don’t cancel out the weight of what you’re carrying. Both things are true. You can be deeply grateful and also genuinely struggling. Those two things aren’t in conflict, and you don’t have to earn the right to feel what you feel.
What if I want to talk about family pressure, but I don't want to feel like I'm betraying my family?
We hear this often. Talking about your family in therapy isn’t a betrayal — it’s a way of understanding yourself more clearly, and ultimately of showing up better in those relationships. We won’t reduce your family to a problem to be solved, and we won’t ask you to cut people off or set boundaries in ways that don’t reflect your values. We’ll work within the reality of your life, not an idealized version of it.
Is it possible to grieve leaving my home country even when the move was my choice?
Absolutely — and this is one of the most important things we want immigrants to hear. Grief doesn’t require a tragedy. It requires a loss. Leaving behind a country, a language, a community, a version of yourself — that is a loss. The fact that you chose it, or that it was the right decision, doesn’t make the grief any less real. It just means it’s rarely given the space it deserves.
Can therapy help with the pressure I feel to succeed for my family?
Yes. This is one of the most common themes in therapy with first-generation immigrants, and one of the most nuanced. We help you understand where that pressure comes from, what it’s costing you, and how to carry your family’s hopes without being flattened by them. The goal isn’t to stop caring about your family. It’s to build a relationship with ambition and success that belongs to you.
What if I've experienced racism or discrimination — can I talk about that in therapy?
Yes — and we want you to. The impact of racism, microaggressions, and systemic barriers on mental health is real, well-documented, and frequently minimized in everyday life. You won’t need to justify your experience, educate your therapist, or manage their discomfort. We take it seriously, and we work with the genuine emotional and nervous system toll it leaves behind.
Is therapy covered by benefits for newcomers to Canada?
Coverage varies depending on your situation. If you have employer-provided or private extended health benefits, psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist is often covered. Some newcomer-specific programs also provide support. We’d encourage you to check with your benefits provider directly. We’ll provide a digital receipt after every session with everything you need to submit a claim.
