Couples Therapy in Guelph, ON
Reconnect, repair, and build something stronger.
Evera Psychotherapy offers evidence-based couples therapy for partners in Guelph & online across Ontario.
You don't stay together by accident. And you don't grow apart by accident either.
You remember what it felt like when it was good. Maybe it still is, sometimes — glimpses of the connection that brought you together in the first place. But something has shifted. The same arguments keep cycling. The distance between you has grown quietly and steadily. You’re living parallel lives under the same roof. Or you’ve had a rupture and you’re not sure whether it can be repaired.
You’re not here because your relationship is over. You’re here because some part of both of you believes it doesn’t have to be.
Couples therapy at Evera Psychotherapy isn’t about finding someone to tell you who’s right. It’s about understanding the patterns that are keeping you stuck, rebuilding the safety and trust that connection requires, and learning to reach for each other rather than defend against each other.
This is some of the most meaningful work two people can do together. And it starts with deciding to try.
Couples therapy isn’t only for relationships in crisis. It’s for any two people who want to understand each other more deeply and build something more honest and sustainable together. You might recognize:
- The same argument happening over and over
- A growing emotional distance that neither of you quite knows how to close
- Feeling more like roommates or co-parents than partners
- One or both of you shutting down, withdrawing, or going silent when things get hard
- A loss of physical or emotional intimacy that you've stopped knowing how to talk about
- Communication that consistently escalates, goes sideways, or leaves both of you feeling unheard
- Life transitions — a new baby, a move, a career change, a loss — that have put the relationship under strain
- A sense that you love each other but can't quite seem to like each other anymore
Wherever you are in your relationship, if you're both willing to show up, we can help you find your way forward.

What Is Couples Therapy?
Couples therapy is a collaborative, structured process that helps partners understand the patterns driving conflict and disconnection, rebuild trust and emotional safety, and develop the skills to communicate and connect more effectively — not just in the therapy room, but in the daily texture of their life together.
At Evera Psychotherapy, we work with couples at all stages — from partners who want to strengthen an already good relationship, to those navigating a specific crisis, to couples who aren’t sure whether to stay together and need a safe space to figure that out honestly. We don’t come in with an agenda about what your relationship should look like. We come in with genuine skill, cultural humility, and a deep commitment to helping both of you feel heard.
We also understand that relationships don’t exist in a vacuum. Cultural background, family of origin, attachment history, and lived experience all shape how partners show up with each other

Approaches We Use In Couples Therapy
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
EFT is one of the most extensively researched and clinically validated approaches to couples therapy in the world.
EFT helps couples identify the negative interaction cycles that have developed between them — the pursue-withdraw pattern, the escalation spiral, the mutual shutdown — and understand what’s driving them at the emotional level. Beneath most conflict is fear: fear of not mattering, of being abandoned, of being too much or not enough. EFT creates the conditions for those fears to be expressed and met, rather than acted out.
The result, for couples who commit to the process, is a meaningfully more secure emotional bond — one where both partners can reach for each other in moments of vulnerability rather than defending, withdrawing, or attacking.
Cognitive Behavioural Couples Therapy (CBCT)
CBCT applies the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to the relationship — helping couples identify the thoughts, interpretations, and behavioural patterns that are driving conflict and disconnection, and building concrete skills to shift them.
Where EFT works primarily at the emotional and attachment level, CBCT adds a practical, skills-based dimension — communication skills, conflict management, problem-solving, and the ability to identify and challenge the cognitive distortions that turn small frictions into major ruptures. It’s particularly effective for couples who benefit from concrete tools they can use between sessions, and for relationships where specific behavioural patterns are causing significant friction.
Attachment-Informed Work
very person brings their attachment history into their relationship — the patterns of connection, trust, and protection learned in early life that shape how they give and receive love as adults. Understanding each partner’s attachment style and how they interact is often one of the most illuminating parts of couples work. We bring this lens to every session, gently and without reducing either person to a category.
Culturally Humble Practice
Relationships don’t exist outside of culture. The expectations, values, and family dynamics that each partner brings — and the ways those sometimes clash — are a real and important part of couples work. We approach every couple with genuine curiosity about the cultural context shaping their relationship, and we never impose a one-size-fits-all model of what a healthy partnership should look like.
No matter what your story looks like, you’ll be met here with compassion, curiosity, and honesty.

Common Questions About Couples Therapy
Do we have to be in crisis to start couples therapy?
No, some of the most effective couples work happens before things reach a breaking point. Many couples come to therapy wanting to deepen their connection, prepare for a major transition, or address patterns they’ve noticed before they become entrenched. The earlier you start, the more options you have.
What if one of us is more reluctant than the other?
This is incredibly common, and it doesn’t mean therapy won’t work. Many successful therapy journeys start with one partner more committed than the other. What matters most is that both people are willing to show up and engage honestly.
Will the therapist take sides?
No. Our role is never to arbitrate, judge, or declare a winner. We’re here to help both of you feel heard, to illuminate the patterns that are keeping you stuck, and to help you find new ways of reaching each other. Both partners matter equally in the room.
How long does couples therapy take?
It depends significantly on what you’re working on and where you’re starting from. EFT typically runs 8 to 20 sessions for couples dealing with moderate distress, and longer for those navigating significant ruptures or complex histories. CBCT can produce meaningful change in a shorter timeframe for couples working on specific communication patterns. Your therapist will give you an honest picture after getting to know your situation.
